Creating a Custom Pattern: Diagonals
septembrie 21st, 2009
1. Open Photoshop and create a new document of 25px/25px or smaller.
To create a pattern for buttons, create a document of 13px/13px.

2. Fill the Background layer with a dark color, black (#000000), for example.
3. Add a new layer on top of the dark background.
4. Select the Zoom tool (z) and zoom in the document to its maximum size.
5. Press the D+X keys on your keyboard to reset your foreground/background color to white/black.
6. Select the pencil tool and set it to 1 px.
7. Draw the following 13px lines on the square:

Note: Each line is 1px/13px or 13px/1px. For buttons, for smoother stripes, we use a 13px/13px document and the lines, we draw, are 1px/8px and 8px/1px.
8. Connect the lines like in the image below:

9. Use the Pencil tool to fill the empty areas with white:

10. Hide the Background Layer (Black).
11. From the Edit menu, select Define Pattern.
12. In the Pattern Name dialog, enter a name for the newly created pattern.

13. Click OK.
This type of pattern is usually used for website backgrounds and wallpapers. To create this pattern for buttons, you need to create a new document 13px/13px, and draw lines of 8px instead of the lines of 13px. This way you will create 5px stripes.
